Chemistry
The timeline of each subject is correlated with the BC Standards. However, homeschooling is flexible so feel free to use each unit as you see fit. Just know that (for example) the Matter All Around Us unit aligned for kindergarten won't be challenging enough for a grade 5 student; and the Mixtures unit will be far too in depth for a grade 1 student. I would say each unit likely has a +/- of 1-2 grades depending on your child.
Scope + Sequence (K-2)
🧪 Matter All Around Us
What is matter?
fabric, wood, water, paint, air, etc
What properties does matter have?
colour, texture, flexibility, etc
🧪 Solids Liquid + Gas
How do the properties make it useful?
the cold of ice helps to cool down a drink, etc
How do you group together like matter items?
solids keep their shape, liquids flow, etc
🧪 Changes to Matter
Why would you want to change the properties of matter?
bake a cake so you can eat it, etc
What is the difference between a physical and chemical change?
physical is reversible, chemical is irreversible
How do you make a chemical reaction?
heat, etc
Scope + Sequence (3-5)
🧪 All Matter is Made of Particles
How is matter and energy related?
the movement of particles, etc
What is an atom?
beginner intro to the elements of an atom
How do you define matter?
matter has mass and takes up space
🧪 Phases of Matter
What effect does temperature have on matter?
melting, freezing, boiling, etc
How does matter change phases?
temperature, pressure, the change in particle movement, etc
What are some unique properties of matter?
sublimation, deposition, plasma, etc
How can we make use of matter phases in the world?
composting, desalination, etc
🧪 Solutions
How are solutions homogenous?
solubility
How can solutions be separated?
distillation, crystallization, evaporation
What are the properties of a solution?
concentration, PH, etc
Scope + Sequence (6-7)
🧪 Mixtures
How can mixtures be separated?
heat, filter, etc
What are the properties of a mixture?
density, particle size, etc
What are different types of mixtures?
suspensions, emulsions, colloids, etc
🧪 Atoms
What are the similarities and differences of elements and compounds?
What happens to an atom during chemical changes?
rearrange into new products accompanied by an energy change
Elements and compounds and pure substances and crystalline structures
Mixtures
